About Harner Shamanic Counselling
Harner Shamanic Counseling (HSC) is a spiritual method/system of shamanic counseling that follows the ancient principles of shamanism.
As a method of spiritual counseling, HSC is not designed to treat psychopathology. HSC's main objective is "to enlighten our lives". It is a problem-solving system designed to help people discover their own spiritual power and tap into the wisdom needed to successfully manage daily life.
HSC (a copyrighted system) is based on classical shamanism, with the addition of some important innovations created by Michael Harner (founder of the Foundation for Shamanic Studies) through years of his own shamanic counseling practice.
The concepts, practices and objectives used in HSC include:
- non-ordinary reality;
- shamanic journeying and shamanic divination (both undertaken by the customer);
- the realization of one's own personal spiritual power; and
- the discovery of his ability to obtain extraordinary, highly practical spiritual wisdom and answers to important personal questions.
Essentially, the client (with the help and guidance of the shamanic counselor) becomes a practitioner of "divinatory" shamanism. A key feature of HSC is that the true shamanic counselors are the compassionate spirits in non-ordinary reality. These compassionate spirits are sacred teachers whom clients spontaneously encounter on their shamanic journeys, providing non-ordinary reality answers to clients' questions.
The ordinary reality shamanic counselor, on the other hand, does not provide substantial answers or interpretations for the client. They are essentially trained/experienced shamanic "facilitators" who provide encouragement and methodological guidance based on their own experience of shamanism.
HSC uses Michael Harner's electronic sonic-driving technique. This technique is designed to alter the client's state of consciousness so that they can then "step out of time" to use shamanic problem-solving methods.
The client is trained in Harner's unique method of simultaneous narration and recording, to amplify the quality of the experience and provide a continuous record. Through their experiences in the shamanic journey, clients have the opportunity to overcome inhibiting fears and gain self-confidence while acquiring the wisdom of the heart. With this, the client often experiences a sense of personal empowerment and a new-found joy in existence.
In order to preserve the integrity and standards of the Harner Shamanic Counselling system and its teaching, unauthorized use of the Harner name is prohibited by law. Authorization to use the Harner name in this context is limited to those who have successfully completed the Harner Shamanic Counselling professional training.
Five-session package
The HSC method involves 5 sessions, approximately 7 to 10 days apart:
- Journey 1 - a journey to the netherworld (a powerful vibrant non-ordinary reality realm filled with compassionate spirits) to meet a power animal;
- Journey 2 - a trip to the lower world to meet your power animal again and ask a specific question about what ... why ... where ... and/or who;
- Journey 3 - a trip to the Upper World (a powerfully vibrant, non-ordinary realm of reality filled with compassionate, divine "spirits") to meet a spiritual teacher;
- Journey 4 - a trip to the Upper World to meet your teacher again and ask specific questions about what ... why ... where ... and/or who; and
- Journey 5 - a journey to the Upper World or the Lower World to ask a specific implementation question, as in "How can I ..." accomplish this or that in ordinary reality.
